Does Chocolate Cause Acne?

woman eating chocolateHave you stopped eating chocolate because of that question that you do not have a clear answer to? Or have you heard somewhere that chocolate causes acne? The most delicious food in the world, chocolate, has been wrongfully accused for causing acne.

Several causes that cause acne are overactive oil glands, dead skin cells that lodge in skin pores, heredity, and hormonal imbalance. You would be happy to hear that chocolate ironically could help to assist in acne control. Why? Recent scientific studies have found that chocolate stimulates the production of serotonin in the brain, which establishes a calming effect and stability.

The fact that acne is caused by stress is undeniable. If chocolate stimulates the production of serotonin and calms the nerves, well, you might have known the answer already. According to experiments conducted by universities in the United States, the consumption of chocolate, frequent or not, has no effect on the development of acne.

In fact a chocolate bar with milk may be one of the possibilities of causing acne; however it is not the chocolate itself that stimulates the growth of the acne. The milk may be the one responsible for causing acne. There is only one way for chocolate to stimulate the growth of acne. It would be by rubbing the chocolate on your face until it blocks your pores, which is the only way out for the sebum oil. Sebum oil is an oil that helps transport the dead cells out of the skin, helping to moisturize the skin. Sebum oil that is trapped beneath the skin can certainly cause acne. Well, after doing this, then you could assume that chocolate causes acne.

Are you planning to buy chocolate after reading this? Way to go, chocolate is too delicious of a food. Still do not over consume it, even though it does not cause acne. Chocolate can still lead your way to the dentist.

Too much fat or sugar and any food that affects your individual hormone production can affect the sebum oil production.  Eating chocolate can be part of a healthy diet which doesn’t result in acne, and likewise chocolate can be part of an unhealthy diet which does result in acne!

That’s why you will always get personal stories of acne being connected to chocolate, where in fact it’s probably more of a general diet issue. Just remember that there are only certain factors that could aggravate or cause acne and chocolate is not one of them. By following a good diet and daily skin regimen, you can help fight off acne and promote a healthier, younger looking skin.
