How to Prevent Acne Breakouts

Although there is no surefire way to prevent it, the point is you can definitely do something given the right knowledge, understanding, and habits. A common misconception about acne breakouts is that it they are caused by exposure to dirt, dust and sun, eating lots of chocolates or sweets and fatty food. Acne is mainly caused by excess oil production in our skin coupled by dead skin cells and bacteria. Most teens experience such breakout because their oil glands are stimulated as their hormones become active. Studies would say that acne is visible in around 25% of men and 50% of women.

For teens, acne breakouts are usually more common for boys. In adults, women are often more prone to suffer from it. Our bodies are different from one another, thus clearly assessing your genetics, daily diet, and skin regimen will work wonders as these are the major factors in skin development.

The number one rule for preventing acne breakouts is to keep your face clean and fresh. Wash it gently around two or three times every day to keep it clean and healthy. When you are suffering from acne breakouts it is best to avoid exposure to the sun or hot weather conditions or any other form of strenuous activities that will cause you to sweat severely and clog up your pores.

Washing the face will help remove the excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells that cause your pores to get clogged. You may also want to pay attention to your T-zone as this is the area that is the most prone to acne, which is from your forehead, down to your nose, the sides of it, then to your chin area.

For less serious acne problems, you may try using over the counter products. Teens may consider using a lower dosage compared to adults, as adults will have a relatively harder time with pimples or scars to heal. Commonly used treatments include benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. If you do not find these beneficial, your acne becomes worse, or if it is more serious, it’s better to visit a dermatologist who can give you a more medicated ingredient.

When using skin products, like cosmetics, soaps, moisturizers, check on the label and look for those that have non-acnegenic or non-comedonogenic components. Avoid using hair gel or sprays or be sure to keep them off your face as they contain oils that can make your situation worse.

Remember, do not pop your pimples as this can cause them to swell, irritate, and scar. Keep your hands and hair off your face because this will likely cause more exposure to bacteria and lead to acne breakouts. Lastly, eat nutritious food and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle by getting enough sleep and exercise and keeping a healthy, nutritious diet.
